100th Prog at Tongpara Adivasi Village

On 27th April 2025, we celebrated our 9th foundation day along with 100th program at Tongpara Adivasi Village, near Bamonghata Playground (under P.S. Kolkata Leather Complex). WE chose this village because the villagers hailed from Jharkhand and from there to Sundarbans and finally the came down to this village, some own their land and some on govt land. People here are very poor and mostly masons (come and earn their breads from Kolkata and some engaged in fishing on rental basis or on daily wage basis)

In 2024, we first visited the area and found reasonable to help them and through different modes of social outreach prog. e.g. we handed over three sewing machines so that village women can learn and earn something and in the same year we organised an awareness prog on menstrual health and hygiene in association with the Ashok Hall Group of Schools and handed over six months sanitary napkins to young school girls and women alongwith four inners/undergarments each and in addition we offered lunch for all participants.

In 2025 first we arranged a lunch for 200+ children and other villagers, which was a sponsored prog organised by our member on his late mother’s birthday.

Since our 9th foundation day was on 22nd April 2025, we decided to hold our 100th prog on 27th April 2025 (Sunday) here in Tongpara Village, since their standard of living is well below poverty line and our Executive Committee was happy to sanction a big budget for the prog. and gifted huge Ration and domestic items apart from 6 months napkins to young women alongwith two undergarments each.

On this day our beloved member Biswadeep Ganguly”s daughter SUKANYA’s birthday was also celebrated by giving cakes, soft drinks, sweets, chips, biscuits and lozence to 150 children and there was also provision for healthy lunch for 225 persons particiated.

We felt happy when surprise drinks offered to us with green coconuts from their village trees. Our prog started at 11.30 with awareness prog on health and hygiene and before that our lady members were busy packing the sanitary napkins and undergarments and pain killing tablets. Our lady members nicely conducted the gathering.

In 2nd phase we started our prog with delivery of speech by our President, Mentor and Secretary and started handing over Ration to all the families.

During the program our Secretary gave a proposal to the young women as ” IF YOUNG WOMEN CAN SAVE RS.30/- A MONTH, I,E RS.360/- IN A YEAR (WHICH WILL HELP THEM BUY 6 MONTHS NAPKINS, OUR ORGANISATION WILL GIVE THEM SUBSIDY FOR ANOTHER 6 MONTHS, SO THAT THE WOMEN FIND IT GOOD FOR THEIR HEALTH), this proposal was partially accepted in the gathering itself and they will discuss with their guardians and will convey to us the outcome.

One good proposal was also given to us by the Vice President of the Club, Sri Proshanta Pramanik that the village requires one Submersible Pump to meet required water and we have told them that the matter will be discussed in our E C Meeting and the outcome will be conveyed to them.

Very good arrangements were done by the Tongpara Adivasi Kalyan Sangha.

Program ended with absolute happiness.

  1. As a member of The Straight Talk (TST), I feel proud to participate in the 100th programme of our renowned organisation.
Tongpara is a remote village and their residents are extremely underprivileged.
We are glad to help them with our limited resources.
